Folly Beach Fishing
If you enjoy fishing, the
Charleston
region offers an impressive variety and abundance of aquatic
life. The possibilities here are endless; from deep sea fishing
to fly fishing in backwater estuaries to shrimping and oyster
harvesting.
If you are planning on fishing in
South Carolina, state law
requires that you have a fishing license. A Resident Freshwater
Fishing License (required for all public freshwaters when using
manufactured equipment and/or artificial bait). The cost is $10
for a 1 year license. Residents have the option of choosing a
14-day license for $5. Annual resident Saltwater Fishing License
(required to harvest oysters or clams or to fish for marine
finfish from privately owned boats) is $10. $5 for a14-day
license. A Shrimp Baiting License (required to take shrimp by
cast net over bait during set season) is $25.
South Carolina residents also have the terrific savings option
by purchasing a Lifetime Freshwater or Saltwater Fishing License
for only $300. Annual Non-Resident Freshwater or Saltwater
License fee is $35. $11 for a 7-day license. A Non-Resident
Shrimp Baiting License is $500. Please be aware that fishing is
NOT permitted off highway bridges unless otherwise posted.
If you’re looking for an experienced local fisherman to show you
the ropes, the Charleston region offers a great selection
fishing charters:
• Boatyard Blue Charters
• Capt. Rick Hiott’s Inshore Fishing Charters
• Charleston Charter Fishing
• Hot Shot Charters
• Palmetto Charters
• Squid Row Deep Sea Fishing Charters
• World Music Charters of Folly Beach
These are just a few of the fine fishing charters in the area.
To help preserve the region’s precious coastal ecosystem, some
local fishing charters practice (CPR) Catch, Photograph, and
Release.
One of the best fishing spots in the area is the pier on Folly
Beach. The Edwin S. Taylor Folly Beach Fishing Pier is 25 feet
wide and extends more than 1,045 feet into the Atlantic Ocean.
The pier is situated 23 feet above sea level and features a
1,400 square foot covered shelter. Rental rods are available at
the Gangplank Gift & Tackle Shop. The pier also has restrooms
and if you’re hungry or thirsty you can visit Locklear’s Beach
City Grill located at the mouth of the pier.
If you’re looking for a new rod, reel, lures or tackle, the
Charleston Angler has everything you could imagine for your
fishing needs. They are the premier saltwater fishing and fly
fishing tackle shop in the area. Charleston Angler is opening a
new store in Mount Pleasant in late spring of 2006.
If competition is your thing, the Charleston Trident Fishing
Tournament may be for you. The Charleston Trident Fishing
Tournament annually recognizes outstanding saltwater and
freshwater catches made in the tri-county area. Yearly winners
receive plaques acknowledging their catches. The tournament runs
from March 1 to October 1.
Enjoy the abundance and variety of maritime life in the
Lowcountry. In flats and rivers around Charleston, fishermen can
expect to encounter Flounder, Red Drum, Black Drum, Bluefish,
Speckled Trout and Sheepshead. The shore water and harbors
provide the opportunity to catch King Mackerel, Channel Bass,
Spanish Mackerel, Tarpon and a variety of shark species.
Buy a license, follow the rules, grab a pole and enjoy the
wonders of fishing in the Charleston area.
